A collection of Bulgarian traditional music released by the UK indie label 4AD. Describing it like that might make it sound like a typical record, but the divine, cosmic female chorus shocked the world. This is the original UK pressing at the time of release, and the 23 Envelope jacket work enhances its mystique. I won't go into why 4AD released traditional music, as it's been written about extensively elsewhere, but it's a record that makes you think that the attempt to express the state of God = the world = the universe through music is common across eras and regions, like Bach, Mongolian throat singing, Indian sitar, and Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, etc. There are countless backgrounds, such as the accidental history of medieval invasion wars, the Cold War, and socialist policies. I also have the CD version, but the power of the sound is unique to vinyl.
